After a five goal first period outburst, the back-to-back to-back All-State Academic Milford Mavericks (5-1) tightened the cinches and held on for a hard fought, penalty filled 5-4 victory over aggressive and well coached Livonia Franklin Friday night at Eddie Edgar.
Milford had the pleasure of meeting and discussing life and hockey with Livonia Stevenson's outstanding Coach Mr. David Mitchell about an hour before the game which likely contributed to the Mavs first period outburst.
The Mavs were led by goaltender Tyler Kerr who made 46 saves on 50 shots for his fourth win of the young season.
Team leading scorer Austin Combs continued his torrid State leading point pace with one goal and two assists, while Gold lineys Pierce Ashcroft sniped his sixth goal of the young season and Mack Musialowski had two assists.
James Pennebaker and Josh Raya also lit the lamp with a goal apiece, the first of the year for each and Senior Captain Ben Kozar netted what turned out to be the game winner for his third goal in the last two games with assists to Silver Line Mates Tyler Tori and Tristan Ingram-Reeve. Kaz Bowring added an assist to complete the scoring.
As great as the win was, the Mavs suffered an apparent broken ankle injury to Sophomore Matthew Rowe. Rowe was tripped into the boards immediately after making a great pass that led to speedy forward Pennebaker's goal.
The Mavs travel to Brighton's KVIH next Thursday at 7PM for a huge LVC game against back-to back league champs South Lyon Unified after three days of needed practices.
