Huron Valley Varsity hockey secures LVC title with win over South Lyon Unified

Posted on 02/03/2026
Feb 2, 2026. 8 pm:   The bad news was Punxsutawney Phil foresaw six more weeks of winter.   The great news is the Huron Valley Titans secured their first LVC title in their first year as a united program on Monday night with a dramatic 6-5 overtime victory vs South Lyon United.   It was indeed Groundhog Day as Maverick and Eagle varsity hockey players combined to earn LHS its share of a sixth consecutive LVC title and MHS its second LVC hockey title (Lakeland and Milford split the title in 21/22 pre-BFF days).

The game was a seesaw affair with SLU building a two goal lead in the first.  HVS' sole tally came when senior captain Gavin Hewitt blasted one of his patented video game one timers on a pass from Killan Voorhies (Levi Weinberger).  3-1 after one.

Voorhies and Hewitt combined to pop in the second Titan goal.  Hewitt was stalwart on the point to keep the puck in the SLU zone.  Voorhies picked up the loose puck, went back Hewitt for another point shot and deftly picked up the rebound for the score.  Later Milford's Tommy Colt tied the game burying another rebound thanks to some very hard work by Lakeland's Austin Scanlon (Nate Dell) to gain the zone and center the puck.  Spoiler alert - keep an eye on T Colt.  3-3 after two.

SLU notched the first goal of the third period early on.  Not five minutes later Lakeland sophomore Carson Roland launched a bomb pass from the pocket to Scanlon.  Scanlon hit a streaking Voorhies whose shot left a plum rebound for Craig Borges.  Borges missed the puck but cleared a lane for Milford's Lucas Brethauer to score from just under the blue line.   SLU scored again to go up 5-4 and it looked grim for the Titans.     Fear not.  With under three minutes Voorhies found another gear and put a puck on net.  The rebound bounced through four players to find a most patient Borges cruising in the high slot.    Puck buried.  Game tied.  5-5 after regulation.

MHSAA overtime is eight minutes unless a goal is scored.   Tommy Colt stopped the clock at 6:50 in OT when Dell picked up his own rebound and rather than jamming it back into the goalie's belly calmly slid the puck to Colt who finished it off smartly into the SLU net.  6-5 Titan victory to lock up the league title.

Tim Ronayne on the big win:  "South Lyon is as tough as they come and we had to scrap for this win.  We got the rough goals in the paint.  They outshot us but Ben (Johnson) kept us in it with 30 saves.  We kept taking punches and coming back for more.  Huge shoutout to the student section for showing up in force on a snowy Monday night.  The boys fed off their energy."

The Titans meet the current #2 ranked Cranbrook Cranes at the sporty Lakeland Ice Arena on Wednesday 2/5.  Puck drops at 7:20 pm rain or shine.

Annual Fundraiser Game Nets a Win For The Team and Rainbow Connection

Updated on 01/12/2026
Saturday night marked the annual fundraiser game vs Walled Lake United benefiting the Rainbow Connection organization that fulfills wishes for Michigan children battling life-threatening illnesses.   Lakeland Arena was packed to the rafters and after a heartfelt ceremonial puck drop the teams got down to business.

Craig Borges (Voorhies) kicked off the scoring drilling a powerplay wrist shot that trickled through the WLU goaltender.  Later Lakeland sophomore Carson Roland (Voorhies) fired a quick shot from the point on the Titan's second powerplay.  2-0 after one.

Lakeland senior Gavin Hewitt (Borges, Voorhies)  boomed a one timer from the left point to put the Titans up by three.  Late in the second period Weinberger scored to finish off a beautiful set up from Scanlon and Voorhies that left WLU somewhat frustrated.   Just two minutes later Milford junior Lucas Brethauer scored yet another Titan point shot thanks to some hard work by Weinberger and Voorhies (yep that's 5 assists on the night for KV!) deep in the Whitecap zone.   The Caps notched their only goal of an otherwise perfect game for goalie Ben Johnson.  5-1 after two.

Milford's Mikey Yee scored the final goal of the night thanks to a nifty spin-o-rama feed from Scanlon.
6-1 Titans final.

Head Coach Tim Ronayne: "This game is a big part of every season.  It's an honor for all the players to skate for important people in their lives impacted by cancer.  And the huge crowd and bench reaction when Gavin (Hewitt) scored?  Well that tells you everything you need to know about Gavin and how we all feel about him."
