Boys Varsity Ice Hockey vs. Father Gabriel Richard HS School

Game Date
Feb 22, 2019
Score
MAVS: 5
FATHER GABRIEL RICHARD HIGH SCHOOL: 9

The Mavs fought back from a 7-2 deficit going into the third before finally falling to Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard/Greenhills Unified Friday night at the Cube in Ann Arbor.

The Mavericks flew out of the gate in the third period with two quick goals in the first minute and a half with Freshmen Matt Rowe and Junior Tyler Tori lighting the lamp to bring the Mavs within three, 7-4 with plenty of game left.

Freshmen Luke McIntyre banged in a rebound goal after Freshmen Tucker Combs was robbed on his attempt to make it 7-5 with eleven minutes to go.

The Mavs continued to take the play to the highly ranked Irish, but couldn't slip the disk past Irish goalie Jake Janowski.  Gabriel Richard scored two late goals, one with five seconds to go in the game, for the 9-5 win.

Austin Combs led the Mavs with one goal and two assists, giving him fifty points for the regular season, while his halfback partner, fellow Sophomore Kazuma Bowring, picked up three assists, giving him 41 points for the year, which should give both student/athletes strong consideration for All-State recognition, as voted on by head coaches throughout the State.

Senior Captain Connor Meadows continued his strong play with an assist and a +2, Junior Tori ended up with 2 goals, while McIntyre picked up an assist to go with his goal, and Tucker Combs had an assist and finished +2 on the night.

Milford Freshmen Tyler Whitney played well in his first start as a Mav with 18 saves on 24 shots before splitting time with fellow Frosh Harris Partyka who made 8 saves on 11 shots.  The two Irish goalies made 24 saves on the 29 shots they faced.

"It was a great comeback effort against a quality team, despite missing two key torpedos and our starting goalie," said Coach Dennis Gagnon.  "This should give our guys the confidence they need to compete with and hopefully upset Cranbrook."

Milford travels to Wallace Ice Arena Monday to face perennial state powerhouse Cranbrook/Kingswood in a 7:15 start Regional game.
